There have been some really amazing feats by Canadian sporting teams over the past 50 years. Here are the top 12. (Very difficult to place these accomplishments in order).
1. Toronto Blue Jays winning the 1992 World Series and then repeating in 1993. (First and only Major League team from Canada to win World Series).
2. Team Canada, (men), winning the 2002 Olympic Gold Medal in hockey. (Canada hadn't won the Gold Medal in 50 years and hockey has been known over the globe as our game).
3. Team Canada Juniors, (men), winning 13 Gold Medals and 26 Medals in total since 1974, (start of annual event), at the World Under 20 Hockey Championships. (Last won Gold Medal in 2007 making it three years in a row).
4. Team Canada, (women), winning two Gold Medals and one Silver Medal in each Winter Olympics since 1998 when women's hockey became an Olympic event.
5. Team Canada beat Team USA, which was filled with so much Major League talent, 8-6 during round robin play at the World Baseball Classic in 2006.
6. Canada was 3rd overall in the Medal Count at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
7. Canada was 5th overall in the Medal Count at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
8. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the L.A. Kings in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993 marking the last time a Canadian franchise has captured the Stanley Cup but since 1958 the Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup 15 times and 23 in total.
9. Okay not a team sport but I had to add Mike Weir's brilliant performance at the Masters when he captured Canada's first Green Jacket in 2003.
10. Team Canada's dominance at the Summit Series/Canada Cup/World Cup of Hockey championships. Canada has won 6 of 8 championships since 1972 and last winning the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
11. The Vancouver Whitecaps won the 1979 NASL championship, (one of only two Canadian teams to ever capture the title).
12. Between the Montreal Canadiens, (15), Edmonton Oilers, (5), Toronto Maple Leafs, (4), and Calgary Flames, (1), Canada has won the Stanley Cup 25 out of the past 50 times it has been played for. Sure a Canadian team has not won since 1993 but after recent drives to the final by Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa, Canada will once again regain the Cup in no time at all!
